How to have happy kids during a sunset session

SOME TIPS AND ADVICE FOR having happy kids during a sunset family photo shoot

“Bedtime is 7:00-Can we do the session earlier”?

Outdoor sessions are best when booked during ‘golden hour’ – that magically sun-kissed time, about an hour or so before the sun sets.

“But that’s when our kids go to Bed!”

You’re not alone. This is a really common concern and believe me I completly understand it.

However, as a family photographer, I am here to tell you that IT IS TOTALLY WORTH IT to keep your kids up for that pretty and flattering light.

~I’m sure it seems stressful, and you worry your kids will be unhappy, but here are some tips to set you and your family up for success~

Push the nap time.

You know those days when you feel frustrated because your little one doesn’t want to go down for their nap at their normal time? Take advantage of it on family photo shoot day. Embrace starting that nap later.

Along those lines, keep the day as low key as possible. Don’t fill it with a busy schedule. This will ensure they aren’t worn out from a busy day.

Bring some special snacks for the car ride.

Don’t show up hungry! Please make sure everyone (including parents!) have been fed before our session.

Bring some non-messy snacks for the car ride. Having a snack will help to keep them awake for the drive.

Choose things that won’t stain their teeth or cheeks. And make sure their faces are clean when you are ready for the family photo session.

Try not to let them fall asleep in the car. sometimes that can result in a grumpy little one.

DRESS FOR THE WEATHER

Make sure they are warm enough. Even on a summer evening it can get chilly as the sun goes down.

Better to dress in layers and remove something than it is to be too cold.

We’ll loose them quickly if they are cold. Cold kids aren’t happy kids.

Here’s another important thing to consider-

Being tired at home is not the same as staying up past bedtime while out and about having fun.

We will be on the go and having a good time. Your little ones will be in the moment and being tired won’t even be a thought.

Bring their jammies. Change the kids into them for the ride home.

DOn’t forget to have fun! Happy parents create happy photo shoots with happy kids.

and I know you’ll thank me later for the flattering golden hour light.

Your welcome!
