What to wear for maternity photos
If there is one time in my life that I wish I could go back and document in a pretty and artistic way, it would be from when I was pregnant.
Sadly, it wasn’t really a thing back then, so it never happened. Thankfully these days parent’s see the value in it, which makes me happy. Maternity sessions are some of my most favorite moments to photograph. So if you’re making the commitment to have professional maternity photos done, I say congratulations! I am pretty sure you’ll never regret capturing this special time before the baby arrives. And these photos will become even more treasured as the years slip by.
Here are some tips to help prepare for your maternity photo session.
My first suggestion is to wear something that you feel good in
However, some styles of clothing photograph better than others, espeically when you are pregnant. So, let’s dig in to help you make the best choice.
Should you wear a dress for your maternity photos?
Dresses are a great option. They are comfortable and forgiving with your ever changing pregnant self. The right dress makes you feel good and it also photographs well.
What style of dress should you choose?
Choose one that is fitted up top but then flows below. A dress like this adds movement to a photo, it’s flattering as well as comfortable.
My suggestion would be a maxi dress, but if you prefer a shorter dress that’s fine too. Just make sure that it’s loose enough around your legs to give you room when you sit down.
What color dress should you choose?.
I always default to earth tones and soft colors. They photograph well and they don’t draw the attention away from the people. Solid colors are nice as well as small patterns. Choose texture to add interest over large flowers or pattern.
Don’t wear black or navy or any dark color. It will hide the bump and make it hard to see. Stay away from bright or neon colors. They draw attention and can cast color onto the skin. Muted and soft tones are always the best bet.
What type of fabric is best?
Don’t pick a dress that is stiff. It will wrinkle easily and it won’t form around your belly. Polyester and rayon are good fabric choices. They allow movement without clinging to your legs while you walk. Lace and gauze add texture without being too busy.
Is a form fitted dress right for you?
If you are one of those mama’s that looks great in a form fitted stretchy dress here are a couple things to consider. Be aware of lines showing from undergarments. These dresses can be unforgiving because they show every little bump. However, If you love the look, then choose a flowy lightweight cardigan to toss over. This will hide those bra or underwear marks in the back. Don’t wear a dark color dress as it will hide the bump.
Remember we will do sitting shots, so make sure this style of dress will accomidate that.
What to wear for your maternity session if dresses aren’t your thing?
If you’re more of a jeans or leggings type of girl, that’s okay too. You can choose a flowy tunic style top that creates movement. Or a sweater that shows off your bump is also a fun option. A chunky knit cardigan looks cute over a fitted shirt of tank top. Don’t do a pullover chunky sweater as it will make you look larger than you are. I’m pretty sure that’s not the look you’re going for. :)
Sweaters are great if it’s a cold day. Just make sure that it is something that shows off your bump. Choose a form fitted sweater but make sure it’s not too tight on your back whereas to show the bra line or the line of your pants.
Don’t forget to dress for the weather.
Layers are a great option especially on a chilly day. Things like an open cardigan, a shawl or even a cute small blanket are fun accents. A chunky knit cardian looks great over a dress or a loose or fitted top.
And don’t forget the shoes. You’ll want flats as most of our locations have uneven ground and require some walking. The plus side to a maxi dress is that it gives you the option to wear comfortable shoes that will be hidden by the length of the dress.
What should your partner or kids wear for your maternity session?
This is an opportunity to coordinate your outfits. Don’t be matchy, instead choose complementary outfits. Choose a few colors that look great together.
