How to pick the best location for family photos.
Things to consider when choosing the right location for your family photo session.
Choosing the best location for your family should be somthing you take a look at. It’s not just about picking a pretty place, it should also be what’s best for your family.
We are fortunate because , we live in an area where we have many options and I have some great locations that work well for everyone.
Should you go for an urban feel? Is a beautiful field or barn more your style?
is the beach calling your name?
Or, Could this be the year where an in-home session is best for your family?
When deciding on your photo shoot location the best place to start is with YOUR FAMILY.
Let’s start with the ages of your children.
Can they walk on their own? Will they need or want to be carried?
Some locations require a fair amount of walking as we move from one area to the next.
If you have little ones, this might not work well.
Choosing a location that offers a few different backdrops while staying in one convenient area is a good choice when your children are young. That way we can create a variety of images while keeping it simple for the little ones.
But, If your kids are older, we have more options in choosing a location.
Walking to different spots can feel like an adventure. It keeps things moving can and add to the fun of the session.
Let’s talk about the personality of your family.
I know, that seems like a strange thing to say when we are talking about multiple people, but stick with me on this one.
What kind of family are you?
Are you a family that enjoys the outdoors? Are you and your kids comfortable getting dirty?
Are you the type of family that is comfortable in the tall grass or sitting in the sand? Do you find humor if your child puts a stick or leaf in their mouth?
Will it bother you if the kids get a bit dirty during the photo session? Will you embrace it as part of the experience and memory?
If getting a little dirty during a family session will drive you crazy.
Then The best bet is to schedule your session for the summer months when the ground is dry and not muddy.
If a family session out in nature doesn’t sound like your family, then perhaps you are more inclined to do a session with more of an urban feel.
A place where your shoes and the kids stay clean, the bugs and dirt aren’t an issue everyone feels more comfortable.
An urban photo session provides a unique backdrop with old buildings, alleyways and lot’s of visual interest.
This is a great option for someone that wants a change from the nature backdrop that they may have done in the past. It’s a good fit for older children, families with teenagers, or if you are okay walking around a bit.
Is the beach or a water location a good fit for your family photo session?
People often think that the beach or the river is a great place for family photos. Because who doesn’t love the look of water as a backdrop for family images, am I right? But, If you have a young child that will head right for the water, this might not be the best location for you.
Running towards the water constantly doesn’t sound fun for any of us. Instead, choose a field or barn location so that your little one can run freely with peace of mind.
However, if your child will be content with having some water play at the end, it can be a fun reward. A little toe dipping and water splashing makes for fun photos.
You know your kids best on this one. :)
And if it doesn’t work at this stage OF LIFE, not to worry, you can do a session like this when the kids are older.
Another great option is an in home session.
In-home photo sessions are unique, meaningful and they really reflect your family.
Think bare feet, comfy clothes, cozied on the couch and other areas around your home.
You can’t get more personal than doing a session in the palce you feel the most comfortable. These sessions give a glimpse into your home life like no outdoor location can provide.
What are the REASONS TO DO AN IN-HOME FAMILY SESSION
In the end, wherever we go, we can create beautiful family photos.
To be honest, the perfect location isn’t the most important piece.
