How to prepare for an extended family photo session
Have you ever thought how great it would be to do an extended family session?
Or does the thought of trying to coordinate everyone into one place at one time make you sweat?
Sure, it can feel overwhelming, but with some simple tips and preparation and extended family session can be a breeze.
Before we dig in, I just have to say how meaningful a session like this can be. As I watch my parent’s age, and my grandchildren grow. I appreciate the value in taking the time to freeze these moments and celebrate the multi-generations together.
Do you see the value as well, but don’t even know where to begin? Where would we do the session? What should everyone wear and how much would this cost, are the typical first quesions. Not to worry, I am here to help.
— So let’s jump in, answer those questions and let you in on my top tips to help prepare for your extended family session. —
Plan in advance.
Planning for an extended family session can be a bit tricky. Everyone has different schedules, whether it’s work, sports or someone coming in from out or town, it can require some effort, but it’s worth it!
Step one-contact me for some date options.
Then throw the dates by everyone and find one that works for all.
Once decided, pay the $300.00 deposit and get it on EVERYBODY’s calendar.
Step two-share my style of photography with everyone.
This way everyone will know what to expect. Every photograher has their own style. My style is candid, lighthearted and full of connection and emotion. Sure we might go for an “everyone look a the camera’ shot, but that’s not my intent. It’s helpful if everyone knows this going in.
Not to worry, I am going to guide and give prompts all the way through.
—What to wear?—
Make things easy by choosing a simple color palate.
choosing the right clothing can feel a bit daunting for a big group. I suggest finding a color plate and building off of that.
You will want to choose colors that compliment each other without being too matchy. Long gone are the days of everyone in khaki’s and white shirts.
Instead- choose earth tones, neutrals, small patterns, layering and texture.
Step three-pick a location
I have a few locations that I often suggest for extended families. They offer space and room for us to move around. When we connect we can discuss the options and pick one that is best for your family.
Because weather is a considertation and a lot of planning goes into coordination, these sessions are best suited for fair weather months.
Step four-be ready for picture day!
Be ready to have fun.
Let go of expectations.
Embrace the crazy.
Go with the flow.
Don’t expect your kids to be perfect. Don’t discipline them, instead act like they are cutest things you’ve ever seen.
Just know that these sessions can be busy, but in a good way. Rest assured I know how to run a session.
Enjoy this time with your family and let’s make a lasting memory!
