What should we wear?

I get asked this question all the time.  Coming up with ideas can feel overwhelming.  But don’t stress, here are a few tips.

I always tell moms to choose their outfit first, then coordinate the rest of the family to her.

Don’t be afraid to be dressy.  Flowy dresses add movement to a photo.

Girls in dresses are adorable.  Remember we will be sitting for some shots, so keep that in mind

Alternate patterns and solids.  One person in a pattern and one in a solid.

Neutrals look great.

Layering looks great.

Accessories are fun:  scarves, necklaces, hats etc.

No logos and no neon or bright colors. They cast color onto the face.

Don’t over think it-have fun with it.  And feel free to ask me if you have any questions.

Where should we do the session?

I have some tried and true locations that I can suggest.  It depends on the look you are going for whether it be an old barn, an urban feel or in the beauty of the PNW.  We can also do the session in your own home or yard.  I am always open to new locations, so let me know if you have an idea.

One important thing to consider-how much walking is involved. If your children are little, picking a location that offers a lot in one area might be best. if your kids are older we can spread out a bit more.

Beach sessions are shot one hour before sunset. Whereas an area with trees can begin a little earlier. Keep that in mind when thinking about the kind of session you’d like.

If you’d like to do a session in your own yard pay attention to the light and where it falls on your yard. We’ll determine the best time to do our session.

If we are doing an in-home session, plan on starting at 10 or 11 am.

Happy kids-happy photo shoot.

Make sure your kids are fed and rested.

You know your kids, if you think a snack (like Goldfish) would help, bring some. If you have to put out a bribe for candy or treat after the shoot, no judgement, I hear it all the time! :)

If it’s cold and you think your child will need a coat- I have two suggestions. Wear your coats, embrace the look, add hats, scarves and mittens. If coats aren’t your jam, wear layers and a warm cozy sweater. Having kids put coats on and take them off doesn’t work well. Ultimately, the kids get cold. Dress for the weather.

Tuck a few Kleenex in your pocket, you’ll want to wipe away any sniffles, especially if it’s chilly out.

If you need to bring a bag or diaper bag, try to make it small. Sometimes I like to snap a few walking pictures as we move around. A diaper bag, kind of kills the look. :) I don’t mind throwing your bag over my shoulder as well.

I’m not looking for perfect children. I don’t even need them to smile. What I do want is for them to have fun, because when they are having fun the smiles will come.

Don’t feel awkward, everyone starts off that way. Just know that I will direct you, I will tell you what to do. Keep it light and fun, the kids will follow, I promise.

Don’t worry if you think your kids aren’t behaving, I know when to change things up. Not to mention, I have seen it all. :)

Remember this is about having fun, playing and loving on your family. We’re not just taking pictures, we’re making a memory.

It happens, we live in the Pacific Northwest.  But… we have a few options.

-I know of some locations that provide coverage.

-We can do our session in your home.

–If all else fails, we can reschedule.

Leading up to our session date I will keep an eye on the forecast. I will be in contact with you to discuss our options and make plans. Sometimes we wait until the day of to make our final decision. I know, that’s hard, but it’s the PNW.
